GAME DAY: Mustangs face Hounds at AT&T Stadium

SATURDAY...
No. 23 Midwestern State (1-0) looks to win back-to-back games and avenge a loss late in last season when the Mustangs open Lone Star Conference play against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds (2-0) in the Lone Star Football Festival. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.  It's the fourth game of the day and will conclude the Festival.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS…

Eastern New Mexico enters the game with a record of 2-0 overall after beating Adams State (Colo.) 42-14 at Greyhound Stadium in Blackwater Draw, N.M., last Saturday.  The Hounds are also opening Lone Star Conference play with this game..

The Greyhounds are under the command of head coach Josh Lynn, who sports a 12-10 record in his third year at ENMU. He led the Hounds to a Lone Star Conference Co-Championship with Tarleton State after posting a 7-3 campaign with a 5-1 LSC record.  Not included in the record is an exhibition victory with the Air Force Academy JV.

The Greyhounds have the ninth ranked offense in NCAA Division II, the third in the Lone Star Conference, averaging 543.5 yards a game.  Of that ENMU is collecting 322.5 yards on the ground and 221.0 yards passing.  The wishbone/flexbone, triple-option attack is keyed by junior quarterback Jeremy Buurma of Las Cruces, N.M., who leads NCAA Division II in pass efficiency with a 232.03 rating as he has completed 15-of-31 passes for 442 yards and six touchdowns.  He averages 221.0 yards a game in the air.  His favorite target is senior receiver Jacob Johnson of Idalou, Texas, who has five catches for 241 yards and three TDs, an average of 120.5 yards a game to rank first in the LSC and 14th in Division II.

The ground game is led by senior fullback E'lon Spight of St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood East, who leads the LSC and is 10th in Division II averaging 126.0 yards a game by collecting 252 yards on 57 carries with two touchdowns. Sophomore D'maujeric Tucker of Lubbock, Texas/Frenship adds 43.0 yards a game and senior Jordan Wells of Austin, Texas/Round Rock adds 42.6 yards a contest.

Defensively, senior linebacker Seth Bailey of Texico, N.M., paces the way with 15 total tackles or 7.5 per game.  Sophomore linebacker Elliott Peters of Mesepa, American Samoa, has 12 stops (6.0 per game) with a team leading 3.0 tackles for loss for -20 yards. Senior linebacker Benjamin Pedro-Langford of Pago Pago, American Samoa, chips in 11 tackles (5.5 per outing).

The Greyhounds are second in the LSC in Total Defense, 40th in the nation, allowing 310.0 yards a game.

piled up 10 stops against Chadron. Free safety Dawan Ferguson, a senior from St. Louis, Mo./Riverview Gardens, posted nine tackles. Sophomore linebacker Rob Cidlik of Eureka, Mo. added six tackles, including 1.5 tackles for losses of seven yards. Senior defensive end Daleroy Davey of Kansas City, Kan./Turner recorded 2.5 tackles for losses of nine yards against Chadron, including the only sack for the Miners (-5 yards).

All-Time Series: Midwestern State leads the series 14-5, but had an 11-game winning streak over Eastern New Mexico snapped by the Greyhounds 40-21 on Nov. 9, 2013 at Blackwater Draw.  This is the first neutral site game between the two schools.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Midwestern State opened the season 1-0 with the Mustangs 40-23 victory over Missouri S&T.
The win was the first season opening victory since MSU beat MST 41-0 on Sept. 10, 2011.
  • The game was the first season opener at home for MSU since 2009, when Midwestern beat New Mexico Highlands 41-0 on Aug. 29, 2009.
  • The Mustangs won their 10th straight home opener, and are now 12-1 in home openers under Coach Bill Maskill.
  • The win was the 96th of Coach Bill Maskill at Midwestern State, running his record to 96-37, with a 72.1 winning percentage, as he started his 13th season at MSU.  Maskill has an overall record of 109-45, a 70.8 winning percentage, starting his 15th season as a collegiate head coach.
  • The Mustangs return to the American Football Coaches Association Division II Top 25 this week at No. 23.  It's the Mustangs first appearance in the Top 25 in 2014, and it's the 53rd time in the last 63 polls that the Mustangs have been ranked.  MSU received an appearance on at least one coaches ballot in 99 of the last 100 weeks.
  • The Mustangs ran their record in pre-October games to 42-9 (.823) under Coach Bill Maskill. Since 2006, that record is now 31-3 (.912).
  • MSU ran its record against regular season Division II non-conference opponents to 15-1…Midwestern won its 110th game since the start of the 2000 season with the win over Missouri S&T, bring the Mustangs record in the millennium to a Lone Star Conference best 110-44 (.714).
  • Junior Dominique Williams was named the Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Missouri S&T.  The junior from Houston, Texas/Clements started the Mustangs comeback from a 14-0 first quarter deficit with a 47-yard return for a touchdown.  Williams finished night with the three punt returns for 52 yards and added to kick returns for 67 yards with a long of 39 yards.
  • Williams became the just the second Midwestern State player to return two punts for scores joining former NAIA All American Henry Johnson, who returned two punts for TDs from 1992-95.
  • Williams return was the 14th punt return for a score since MSU brought back football in 1988.
  • Sophomore Dante Taylor rushed for a career-high 128 yards on 15 carries against the Miners, including a 58-yard touchdown run.
  • The effort was Taylor's fourth career 100-yard game at MSU, tying him for 11th on all-time at the university.
  • Junior Levy Wilson caught two passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, marking the Mustangs third straight game of having a receiver post a 100-yard game dating back to the 2013 campaign, all by different receivers.
  • Midwestern State gave up a 91-yard touchdown return on the season-opening kickoff. It marked the first time the Mustangs gave up a kickoff return touchdown since Angelo State's Quinn Reels posted a 100-yard return on Oct. 26, 2013. It was the first opening kickoff return since Abilene Christian's Dennis Campbell raced 97 yards to open the NCAA Division II playoffs on Nov. 14, 2009.
  • Midwestern State returns to AT&T Stadium for the Lone Star Football Festival for the fourth time, with MSU holding a 2-1 record at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
  • The Mustangs face a Lone Star Conference opponent for the fourth time as well in Eastern New Mexico. MSU is the only LSC team to face a conference opponent in the four Lone Star Football Festivals.
