No. 18 MSU edges Tyler 5-4

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs needed everything they had on Tuesday at home against Tyler Junior College as the 18th ranked NCAA Division II team edged the third ranked NJCAA squad 5-4.

The Mustangs (13-5) won their sixth straight, while the Apaches (11-7) lost for the third time in four straight matches against NCAA Division I or II opponents.

The match hinged on the No. 6 singles, where the Mustangs Tomas Grejtak and TJC's Dillon Eizember carried their match not only to three sets, but a final tiebreaker.  Eizember grabbed the opening set 6-1, before the Grejtak came back to claim the second 6-2.  In the third, Grejtak got the match with a 7-5 winner in the tiebreaker to take the set 7-6.

MSU split the singles matches with the Apaches.

The Mustangs grabbed No. 1 as 30th ranked Kacper Boborykin held a 6-4, 2-1 lead when Mate Cutura, the top ranked NJCAA player, retired.  They also took No. 3 when Ramon Toyos defeated James Martell 7-5, 6-3.

TJC got singles points at No. 2 when the NJCAA's 12th ranked Vaughn Hunter took a three-set win over 34th ranked Kyle Davidson 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.  Ryan Hudelson downed the Mustangs Jarrod Liston 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, while Trey Seymour beat MSU's Christopher Norrie 6-3, 6-1.

The Mustangs edge came in doubles play, as MSU's No. 2 tandem of Boborykin/Davidson beat the NJCAA's ninth ranked Hudelson/Hunter 9-8 (7-4), and Liston/Zack Santagate won at No. 3 against Seymour/Eizember 8-4.

The Apaches won at No. 1 with Cutura/Martell, ranked fifth in NJCAA, upsetting eighth ranked Grejtak/Toyos 8-4.
