WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 18th-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs had to wait through a rain-delay and then for indoor courts to become available before finishing off the 17th ranked Cameron Aggies 5-1 on Thursday.
The Mustangs (15-6) grabbed an early lead from doubles when the rains came interrupting singles play with the Aggies (16-8) at the MSU Tennis Center. The teams had to wait more than three-and-a half hours between the rain delay and gaining the availability of indoor courts at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
MSU jumped out to the early 2-1 lead on the strong play at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
The eighth ranked doubles tandem of
Tomas Grejtak/
Ramon Toyos quickly beat Angelo Lencion/Felipe Oyarzun 8-2 at No. 1, and
Jarrod Liston/
Zack Santagate won at No. 3 over Dean Weigelt/Andres Velasco 8-4.
The Aggies only point in the match came at No. 2 doubles as Dennis Merdan/Joao Fazendeiro edged
Kacper Boborykin/
Kyle Davidson 9-7.
In singles, the Mustangs held leads on all six courts when the rain interrupted play.
After going to WFCC, that has three indoor courts, the top three positions resumed the match.
In the battle at No. 1, 30th ranked Boborykin beat 41st ranked Merdan 7-5, 6-4.
Toys then won quickly at No. 3, beating Lencioni 6-4, 6-0.
The match closed when 34th ranked Davidson finished off Oyarzun 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to win the fifth point of the long day. Davidson came back from trailing in the final game of the match down 40-0 to break Oyarzun for the win.
"It's a great win for the Mustangs," said Davidson, a sophomore from Garland. "This was a big win, and a nice one."
The Mustangs were up in matches with Liston at No. 4 and Christopher Norrie at No. 5, but both went unfinished indoors.
Tomas Grejtak never got back on the court after the delay at No. 6 to go unfinished as well.
The win was the 15th straight at home for MSU, who has two more matches at the MSU Tennis Center this weekend. No. 39 Washburn visits on Friday for a 1 p.m. match, while Texas-Permian Basin closes the regular season for the Mustangs with a 2:30 match Saturday afternoon.
