Mustangs crush four homers, split twin bill with Cameron

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State slugged four home runs in a doubleheader split with Cameron Friday night at Mustangs Park taking Game 1, 10-1 ,in five innings before falling in the nightcap, 9-3.

MSU (25-19, 13-9) wraps up its four-game series against the Aggies with a twin bill Wednesday afternoon in Lawton. First pitches are set for 3 and 5 p.m.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the opener when Katelyn Vinson's single up the middle plated Haley Howerton, who had reached on a bunt single and stole second to give MSU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Senior catcher Kim Jerrick drilled a two-run double down the left-field line to highlight a three-run second inning, the belted her 13th home run of the season -- a two-run shot -- in the fourth inning to push the Mustangs' advantage to 6-1.

Jerrick now has 53 career home runs and needs three more to match former West Texas A&M standout Kim LeComte, who hold the Lone Star Conference career mark with 56 from 2009-12.

Cameron scratched for its lone run of the game courtesy of Tara Martini's run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning.

That's all MSU starter Kat Batey would allow as she limited the Aggies to one run on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings to even her record at 6-6.

Freshman Baylee Voigt launched her eighth homer of the season on a two-run blast to center field to clinch the run-rule victory in the bottom of the frame.

Former Burkburnett High standout Paige Dano drilled two homers and drove in the first four runs of the game to key Cameron's 9-3 win in the nightcap.

Martini added a three-run shot in the three-run shot in the fourth to extend CU's lead to 8-0.

MSU junior third baseman Kelley Schaefer connected for her eighth homer of the season to put the Mustangs on the board in the bottom of the frame and freshman Krisha Hamm laced an RBI double to the left-field gap to pull MSU to within 8-2.

The Aggies tacked on a run in the sixth before Midwestern State freshman left fielder Taylor Bermudes sent a high shot over the left-field fence for her first collegiate homer in the seventh.

Freshman Katlyn Holmes took the loss for the Mustangs to fall to 9-9 on the season. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
