Cameron sweeps past Mustangs in Lawton

LAWTON, Okla. -- Sophomore Katelyn Vinson slugged a pair of two-run home runs in the opener Wednesday afternoon, but Midwestern State's struggles continued as Cameron swept a Lone Star Conference twin bill 8-6 and 3-2 at McMahon Field.

The Mustangs fell into fifth place -- a game behind the Aggies -- with a 25-21 overall record including a 13-11 league mark. Cameron improved to 28-16 and 14-10.

MSU, which has dropped 12 of its last 14 games, concludes the regular season with a three-game series against Tarleton State on April 25-26 at Mustangs Park.

Vinson recorded her fourth career multiple homer game and first since connecting on two long balls on April 24, 2013 at Cameron.

The Southlake Carroll product's ninth homer of the season -- a two-run shot down the left-field line -- gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then her 10th round-tripper -- a two-run blast to left field -- put MSU back on top 4-3 in the third frame.

Sophomore second baseman Shelby Carter launched her sixth homer of the season to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning, but the Aggies seemed to always have the answer.

CU plated two in the first and one more in the second before Tara Martini's two-run homer keyed a three-run uprising in the fourth go give the Aggies a 6-4 advantage.

After Carter's blasted knotted the game, Sonora Zukerman answered with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to provide the winning margin.

MSU freshman Erin Knox took the loss to fall to 10-5 on the season. The West native allowed eight runs -- all earned -- on eight eights with three strikeouts and five walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Vinson paced the Mustangs' six-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with two runs and 4 RBIs, while Zukerman led the Aggies going 3-for-4 driving in runs on singles in the first, fourth and sixth frames.

Carly Allerheiligen's sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Makenzie Burk in the seventh inning to lift Cameron to a 3-2 walk-off win in Game 2.

CU's Emily Nix led off the seventh with a double to the right-field gap and Misty Dooley legged out a one-out infield single to set up Allerheiligen's heroics to spoil a solid start by MSU freshman Katlyn Holmes.

Holmes permitted three runs -- all earned -- on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 6 2/3 innings to fall to 9-10 on the season.

The Mustangs took advantage of a Cameron fielding miscue to plate run in the first inning, but Cameron surged to a 2-1 lead on the strength of Paige Daino's two-run single in the bottom of the frame.

MSU sophomore outfielder Haley Howerton's single to center field drove in senior catcher Kim Jerrick to tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning.

Cameron starter Samantha Betts held the Mustangs down from there allowing an earned run on eight hits in seven innings to improve to 11-7.

Juniors Kelley Schaefer and Katelyn Potts led the Mustangs' eight-hit attack by going 2-for-3 with a double each, while eight different Aggies had one hit each.
