No. 18 Midwestern State downs Colorado Mesa 8-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 18th-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs grabbed their second win in as many days on Thursday as they knocked off Colorado Mesa 8-1 at the MSU Tennis Center.

Midwestern (9-5) had to battle in singles, but came away with a strong win over the Mavericks (6-6).

MSU took a commanding lead in the match by sweeping doubles action.

The Mustangs eighth ranked pair of Tomas Grejtak/Ramon Toyos dispatched Jordan Lyden/Spencer Weinberg 8-2 at No. 1 to start it off.  Kacper Boborykin/Kyle Davidson won at No. 2 against Blake Demond/Cody Freischlag 8-4, with Jarrod Liston/Zack Santagate taking No. 3 over Andres Garcia-Rojas/Trevor Brown 8-1.

But the Mavericks made it interesting in the singles competition.

In the battle of the top singles players in the South Central region, CMU's Lyden, ranked 28th nationally, bettered the Mustangs Boborykin, ranked 30th, 6-4, 6-1.  It was the only point CMU got on the day.

Three other singles points went to three sets, but the Mustangs prevailed in all.

Davidson, ranked 34th nationally, survived a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) battle with Weinberg at No. 2.

Christopher Norrie used three to take No. 4 against Demond 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Keegan Sullivan closed the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 win against Brown at No. 6.

Toyos cleaned up at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Garcia-Rojas, and Grejtak handled Freischlag at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1.

The Mustangs have a short night to get ready for No. 22 BYU-Hawaii on Friday.  The match against the Seasiders starts at 9 a.m. at the MSU Tennis Center.
