WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 27-ranked Southwest Baptist (Mo.) used a strong performance in singles to edge No. 18 Midwestern State 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The loss snapped the Mustangs' nine-match winning streak on their home courts as MSU has dropped three of its last four -- all against nationally ranked competition -- to fall to 9-3 on the season.
Midwestern, which last lost to Abilene Christian at home on March 20, 2013, welcomes Colorado Mesa to the MSU Tennis Center Thursday afternoon. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead out of doubles with
Lauren Pineda and
Sydney Briner combining for an 8-4 win over Mehak Singh and Lani Tuemmers at No. 2 while
Courtney Anderson and
Amy Clifton rolled to an 8-2 victory over Andjela Panovski and Paula Carvajaleno at No. 2.
The Bearcats' ninth-ranked duo of Fanni Varga and Christina Zentai took an 8-4 decision over MSU's No. 20-ranked tandem of
Kayla Casey and
Taylor Coffman at No. 1.
The teams swapped wins as the first two singles' matches came off the courts as Midwestern's Anderson defeated Tuemmers 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and SBU's Zentai took a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 3.
Southwest Baptist edged ahead for a 4-3 lead by outlasting the Mustangs in split sets at the top two positions.
Varga, the No. 4-ranked singles player in Division II rallied for wins in the final two sets 6-2, 6-3 after Clifton claimed the first in a tiebreaker (7-4) before Singh outlasted Casey 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Midwestern's
Paige Boykin improved her season record to 6-1 to even match at 4-all claiming a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Carvajaleno at No. 6, but Panovski clinched the match for SBU by taking a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pineda at the No. 5 position.
Midwestern State dropped to 9-3 on the season, while the Bearcats won their fifth straight to improve to 10-2.
