WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 18 Midwestern State broke out of a three-match skid by rolling to a 6-3 win over 47th-ranked Southwest Baptist (Mo.) Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs improved to 8-5 on the season while running their home court winning streak to 10 matches.
Kacper Boborykin, who jumped ahead 16 spots to No. 30 in the ITA national Division II singles rankings earlier in the day, highlighted the effort by claiming a straight set win (6-2, 6-3) over No. 46-ranked Kristof Kanai at the No. 1 singles position where Boborykin improved to 10-2 this season.
The 6-1 junior from Neunkirchen, Germany also teamed with
Kyle Davidson to claim an 8-3 win over SBU's Chris Blodig and Daniel Cardona at No. 2 doubles.
The Mustangs also earned an 8-1 win at the No. 3 doubles as
Jarrod Liston and
Zack Santagate upended Guido Margiotta and Yannick Doering.
SBU's 19th-ranked doubles' team of Kinai and Omar El Kheshan upset MSU's 8th-ranked duo of
Tomas Grejtak and
Ramon Toyos 8-2 at No. 1 as the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead into singles' play.
Toyos pulled the Mustangs to within a single win of the clincher taking a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Blodig at No. 3 singles, but the Bearcats rallied to take split set wins at the Nos. 2 and 4 as El Kheshan outlasted Davidson 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and Cardona edged Christopher Norrie 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Junior
Jarrod Liston clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Margiotta at No. 5, while Grejtak closed out Doering 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
Midwestern State plays host to Colorado Mesa Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
Southwest Baptist fell to 7-5.
