ABILENE, Texas – The 17th ranked Midwestern State Mustangs claimed a pair of matches on Saturday without losing a point in the Big Country.
MSU ripped Hardin-Simmons 9-0 in the morning, then went across town to defeat No. 41 McMurry 9-0 in the afternoon.
Against HSU (0-2), Midwestern did not drop a set in collecting their third straight win. However the now 5-2 Mustangs dropped one set against McMurry while collecting their fourth straight victory.
In the morning match against the Cowboys, MSU's No. 1 doubles pair of
Tomas Grejtak and
Ramon Toyos went the distance against HSU's Erich Bein and Michael McCullough before taking the 9-7 win.
MSU won at No. 2 doubles with
Kyle Davidson and
Kacper Boborykin beating Nathan Chavez and Jordan Wilson 8-4, while
Jarrod Liston and
Zack Santagate handed Sam May and Andrew Eurek an 8-3 defeat at No. 3.
In singles, Boborykin, ranked 46th in Division II men, downed Bein 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at No. 1. Davidson, ranked 27th and playing at No. 2, ripped McCullough 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 3, MSU's Christopher Norrie beat Chavez 6-3, 6-3, as Grejtak won at No. 4 over May 6-3, 7-5.
MSU completed the sweep with Liston taking No. 5 against Wilson 6-1, 6-0, and
Keegan Sullivan bettering Eurek 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
Later in the afternoon, Midwestern made it a clean sweep of the trip with the blanking of McMurry (1-4).
The Mustangs No. 1 duo of Grejtak/Toyos beat McMurry's 16th ranked team of Chris Breaux and Casjen Rico 8-5, and the No. 2s of Boborykin/Davidson downed Carlos Perez and Dustin Douglas 8-3.
The closest point of the day came in the No. 3 doubles against the War Hawks as Liston/Santagate had to go to a tiebreaker to beat McMurry's Preston Steblein and Felipe Cruz 9-8 (10-7).
Boborykin led the singles barrage with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Cruz at No. 1, with Davidson taking Breaux 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.
Toyos shutout Dani Perez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Grejtak downed Cristiano Mendes 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and Liston beat Rico 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
The only set lost during the day came at No. 4 singles where Norrie dropped the first set to Steblein 4-6, then came back to take the second set 6-3 and the 10-point third set 10-5.
The Mustangs are in action again on Thursday when they travel to Ada, Okla., for matches against Seminole State and East Central.
