SAN ANTONIO -- Midwestern State junior
Katy Vandewater hit her fourth home run to put away Oklahoma Christian 8-5 Friday night here at the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational.
The Mustangs claimed their fourth consecutive win to improve to 9-4 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 4-5.
MSU freshman
Erin Knox allowed all of her damage in the fourth and fifth innings OC struck for two runs in the fourth and Kendra Pierce blasted a three-run bomb to center field in the fifth inning to give the Eagles a brief 5-4 lead.
Knox limited OC to just two hits in her other five innings to improve to 4-2 in the circle. She notched three strikeouts and issued three walks.
Sophomore
Haley Howerton extended her hitting streak to 10 games in the third inning on a double to center field to plate
Kim Jerrick, who had reached on a leadoff. Howerton would come around to score on Vandewater's single up the middle to give the Mustangs a 2-0 edge.
Katelyn Potts lead off the fourth with a pinch-hit double down the left-field line and eventually scored on a wild pitch, then Howerton delivered her second two-bagger of the contest and would also plate a run on a wild pitch to give MSU a 4-2 advantage.
The Eagles struck for three runs on Pierce's second homer season in the top of the fifth, but the lead was shortlived.
Sophomore second baseman
Shelby Carter led off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle then Knox roped a double to the left-field gap.
Baylee Voigt tied the game on an infield single to score Carter before Potts delivered RBI-single up the middle to stake MSU to a 6-5 advantage.
Vandewater put the game with a blast over the left-field fence to give the Mustangs a three-run lead.
Knox paced the Mustangs 14-hit barrage with three safeties while
Kelley Schaefer, Howerton, Vandewater and Potts all had two hits apiece.
