SAN ANTONIO -- St. Mary's starting pitcher Emily Brittain didn't allow a runner past first base through the first four innings while the 14th-ranked Rattlers peppered Midwestern State pitching with 11 singles to come away with a 6-4 win Friday night here at the St. Mary's Rattler Invitational.
STMU extended its winning streak to 10 games while moving to 14-3 on the season ending the Mustangs' season best five-game streak as MSU dropped to 9-5.
Midwestern State continues tournament play with games against Western Oregon and Central Oklahoma Saturday at The Park at St. Mary's. First pitches are set for 10 a.m. and noon.
St. Mary's struck for single runs in the first and second innings before five-straight Rattlers reached base in a four-run fifth inning highlighted by two-run singles by Haley Richter and Laura Benavidez to take a 6-1 lead.
The Mustangs finally got to Brittain, who improved to 10-2 on the season, in the fifth as
Shelby Carter reached on an infield single and was sacrificed to second before
Katelyn Potts drilled an RBI-double to straight away center field to put MSU on the board.
The Mustangs rallied for an unearned run in the sixth before Potts launched her second homer of the season -- a two-run shot to left field -- in the seventh to pull Midwestern to within two runs.
Brittain sat down the next three Mustangs to end the threat. The senior right-hander with a unique release allowed three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings.
MSU starter
Katlyn Holmes took the loss to fall to 3-2 allowing six runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings of work. Sophomore Kat Batey came on to pitch two hitless innings of relief.
Sophomore outfielder
Haley Howerton extended her career-best hitting streak to 11 games with a single through the left side in the first inning.
