WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Freshman
Katlyn Holmes fanned a season-high seven batters to help Midwestern State to a 5-2 win over Rogers State (Okla.) in the finale of the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs closed the weekend with a 4-1 mark after claiming a 14-2 run-rule victory over Northeastern State earlier in the day to go to 8-4 on the season.
The Hillcats (1-4) struck for their only damage on Carley Conley's two-run homer in the fourth inning, but Holmes closed strong to retire 10 of the last 11 batters she faced to move to 3-1 on the season.
Midwestern State jumped out an early lead in the first inning as
Kim Jerrick was hit by pitch and moved around the bases on a pair of groundouts before
Kelley Schaefer stroked a solid single to right field to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
The Mustangs took advantage of four Rogers State miscues in the second inning to plate three unearned runs as sophomore
Haley Howerton extended her hitting streak to nine games with a single to center field.
Junior shortstop
Katy Vandewater led off the third inning with her third homer of the season on a towering shot to center field to give MSU a 5-0 advantage.
RSU's Brooklyne Harbert (0-2) allowed one hit the rest of the way as she allowed two earned runs on four hits and walked four in six innings.

Krisha Hamm accounted for the Mustangs' season low hit output of four.
Midwestern State opens the St. Mary's Round Robin with games against Oklahoma Christian and St. Mary's Friday afternoon in San Antonio. First pitches are set for 4 and 6 p.m., respectively.
The Mustangs take on Western Oregon and Central Oklahoma on Saturday before closing tournament play against Rogers State (Okla.) and St. Mary's on Sunday.
