WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Sophomore outfielder
Haley Howerton drilled a two-run double to center field to highlight five-run rally in the sixth inning to lift Midwestern State to an 8-5 win over Northeastern State Saturday night in the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs, who improved to 6-4 on the season, salvaged a split in the second day of tournament play after falling to Southern Arkansas 13-11 early in the day.
Midwestern takes on Northeastern State and Rogers State Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitches are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The double extended Howerton's team-best hitting streak to seven games as the Lewisville High product has turned on the power slap to hit .538 five doubles and a triple while driving in seven runs during the stretch. She pounded balls off of the fence on three occasions narrowly missing her first career home run.
Sophomore pitcher Kat Batey came on in relief of
Katlyn Holmes to calem the Northeastern State bats to earn her second victory of the season. She permitted a single hit in four innings of work recording a pair of strikeouts while walking two.
Freshman
Jennifer Quintero also enjoyed her best performance of the season igniting each of the Mustangs' three rallies in the contest beginning with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to spur a two-run first inning to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Northeastern State struck for two home runs in the third inning including a three-shot by Alyssa Aguilar and two-run blast by Navada Campos to take a 5-2 lead.
Quintero pulled MSU within two runs after she drilled a one-run triple into the right-field gap in the fourth and scored on
Krisha Hamm's sacrifice fly.
Quintero lead of the five-run seven with a single up the middle as five-straight would reach.
Hamm followed with a single to left field and
Chelsey Wall roped an RBI double to the left-field gap to plate Quintero as MSU trailed 5-4.
Northeastern State elected to pitch around leadoff
Kim Jerrick and Howerton made the RiverHawks pay with a two-run double to give the Mustangs a 6-5 lead.
Katelyn Vinson and
Kelley Schaefer followed with sacrifice flies to push the advantage to three runs.
Quintero led MSU's 10-hit attack by going 3-for-3 while Wall and
Katy Vandewater added two hits each.
Northeastern State dropped to 2-4.
