Southern Arkansas comes back to beat Mustangs, 13-11

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Southern Arkansas used an 8-run third inning to cap a nine-run comeback to take a 13-11 win over Midwestern State in the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs fell to 5-4 on the season after getting off to a blazing start.

Sophomore Haley Howerton just missed her first collegiate home run when she blasted an opposite field double off of the fence in left field before coming in to score on Katelyn Vinson's RBI-single put he middle in the bottom of the first inning.

Midwestern extended the advantage 3-0 later in the frame on Shelby Carter's 2-run single up the middle.

The Mustangs continued to pour on the runs in the second inning as Howerton drilled a one-out, two-on double which glanced off of the top of the center field fence to plate Chelsey Wall, who had reach on a single. Vinson followed with a three-run blast to center field to push the advantage to 7-0.

Southern Arkansas responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning before the Mustangs rallied for four more runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by Kim Jerrick's run-scoring double to left field.

The Muleriders scored two more runs in the fourth then ignited for eight runs on nine hits in the fifth innings as Brooke Goad belted a three-run homer to center field and Chelsea Ivy drilled a bases loaded, bases clearing double to give SAU its first lead of the game at 12-11.

Howerton, Vinson and Kelley Schaefer had two hits each to pace Midwestern State's 10-hit attack.

Sophomore pitcher Kat Batey took the loss to fall to 2-1. She allowed nine runs -- eight earned -- on 15 hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.
