WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The MSU Mustangs got back in the win column on Thursday night, defeating the McMurry War Hawks 77-49.
The Mustangs (5-3) snapped a two game losing streak in convincing fashion in the friendly confines of Ligon Coliseum. The McMurry War Hawks (2-3) were MSU's 9th straight victory under the Dome.
After McMurry took an early four point lead on a Blake Cochran three pointer, the Mustangs rallied for a 7-0 run spurred on by two quick
Pat Smith layups. The Mustangs would hold the lead going into the half, 34-27.
After the break, the MSU power forwards took over.
Xavier Blackburn and
Abiodun Adegoke combined for 27 points and 16 rebounds, sixteen of those points came in the second frame.
Abiodun Adegoke led the charge in the second, pouring in 6 quick points within the first 4 minutes of the half. Blackburn stretched the War Hawk defense all over the floor, hitting an open 3 pointer to extend MSU's lead to twenty with 8:44 to play.
"This team is still trying to find their identity," said Midwestern State head coach
Nelson Haggerty. "We are becoming an inside-out team. That flow really triggered our good play from our forwards tonight."
The Mustangs got good contributions from
Tavarion Nix and
Trevor Fuller, both adding 10 points each. Nix also grabbed 10 rebounds while Fuller blocked 3 McMurry shots.
Midwestern State dominated the glass over the War Hawks, nabbing 41 boards to McMurry's 24. MSU also won the free throw battle, going 10-19 from the line. McMurry only went to the stripe nine times, hitting five.
MSU returns to the Dome on Friday night, hosting College of Faith (Ark.). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. You can listen to the game on 95.5 ESPN and watch the streaming video on msumustangs.com.
