Mustangs cap 4-0 home stand, beat Lubbock Christian 73-70

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Dianna Jones and the Mustangs snap Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps record road win streak, win 73-70.

The Mustangs (8-1) capped a perfect four game home-stand by defeating the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps. LCU (6-3) entered the contest with the longest active road winning streak in NCAA Division II. Their mark of 17 straight road victories dated back to November 16, 2013 when they lost at Tarleton State.

MSU senior guard Dianna Jones was sharp all night, scoring 12 points in each half. Jones' ability to drive the lane into LCU's front court of 6'3" Tess Bruffey and 6'4" Kellyn Schneider paid off in the long run.

"Our number one goal was to be aggressively patient on offense against their zone," said Mustang head coach Noel Johnson. "And I felt like we did a good job of that tonight."

The Mustangs' patience on offense was tested often as LCU freshman forward Tess Bruffey set a Lubbock Christian school record with 10 blocked shots on the night. MSU did a good job of not making all of those blocks hurt as the Mustangs scooped up 22 offensive rebounds.

Midwestern State senior forward Andrea Carter notched another double-double, pouring in 15 points and handling 12 rebounds. Shambreka Jones added 10 points for the Mustangs as well.

With 1:52 remaining in the second half, the Lady Chaps were trimming MSU's once ten point lead when MSU guard Janae McJunkins stepped in and drew a critical charge against LCU's Haley Burton.

"That was a momentum changer," said Johnson. "She (McJunkins) made a huge defensive play that swung the momentum to us."

After a LCU layup to cut Midwestern's lead to 71-70, Dianna Jones was fouled with 8.5 seconds left in the game. Jones calmly knocked down two ice cold free throws to give the Mustangs the 73-70 lead.

MSU takes this win and will take another break as the ladies will not play again until Saturday, December 20 when they travel to Bethany, Oklahoma to play the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm. That game is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off and can be heard on 95.5 ESPN.
