BETHANY, Okla. — Midwestern State's pressure proved too much for Southern Nazarene Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs rolled to their eighth straight win taking a 75-60 decision at Sawyer Center.
"We played very aggressively in the opening five minutes of both halves," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "But not our record is back to 0-0 with the start of conference play."
The Mustangs, who matched the best start in program history through 10 games by improving to 9-1, tip off Lone Star Conference New Year's night in Denton. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
MSU's full court press gave Southern Nazarene fits forcing the Crimson Storm into 32 turnovers, but it was a quick start in each half that delivered the knockout punch.
Senior guard
Dianna Jones knocked down her first two 3-pointers of the game and
Shambreka Jones hit a layup in transition to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead a little over a minute into the contest.
Dianna Jones delivered her ninth straight double-figure performance finishing with 15 points, while
Shambreka Jones pitched in a season-high 12 points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting.
The Mustangs pushed the advantage to as many as 19 points in the opening half before settling for a 36-20 advantage at the break.
MSU held the Crimson Storm without an offensive rebound in the opening half and the Mustangs held SNU All-America forward Aminata Fall to four points in the first stanza.
Fall would finish with her national best 10th double-double of the season at 18 points and 14 rebounds, but it proved far little and too late.
Midwestern stretched the advantage to 21 points opening the second half on a 7-2 run taking a 43-22 lead on an
Andrea Carter free throw at the 18:28 mark.
Southern Nazarene chipped the lead down to 11 points with 8:44 to play, but that's as close as it would get.
Carter worked her way for a 12-of-14 effort at the charity stripe on her way to a game-high 19 points while pulling down six rebounds.
Freshman
Krishawn Crockett fired in a career-best 10 points firing 4-of-7 shots in the second half including her second 3-pointers of the season.
Southern Nazarene dipped to 5-6 on the season.
