WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State Mustangs used balanced scoring from their starting five to bounce the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies 92-76 on Tuesday night.
The Mustangs (5-1) were led by senior point guard Diana Jones scoring 19, and benefited from another
Andrea Carter double-double (13pts, 10 reb).
Lisa Hampton poured in 15 points while
Shatoia Gober added 12.
Shambreka Jones narrowly missed the double-double mark, scoring 8 points and grabbing a team-high 15 rebounds.
Oklahoma Panhandle State (1-4) were crushed on the glass, being out-rebounded by MSU 52-29. The Aggies did get a big spark from their starting guard combo of Kiera Waters and Sade Tutson who combined for 50 points.
The Mustangs shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, taking a 9 point lead with 13:29 to play in the first half. OPSU would claw back and take a one point lead briefly at the 5:13 mark only to have MSU reclaim the lead on the next possession. Midwestern would surrender the lead just once more in the second half (59-58) before taking the lead for good.
Although Midwestern shot worse in the second half (39.4pct), they made up for it by getting to the free throw line 25 times, connecting on 17.
Lisa Hampton kept the Aggies defense spread thin all night, splashing home 5-8 from three point land.
Dianna Jones went 2-4 from beyond the line.
The win keeps the Mustangs atop the early season standings in the Lone Star Conference, with rivals Tarleton State and West Texas A&M currently with 2-1 records.
Andrea Carter's double-double keeps her as the best in the nation in division II in that category. The senior forward from Angleton, Texas has 5 double-doubles in just six games so far this season.
The Mustangs continue their 4 game home stand after the Thanksgiving holiday, hosting Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) on Sunday, November 30. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
