Mustangs roll past Adams State in season opener

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Shatoia Gober and Andrea Carter combined for 33 points to lead Midwestern State to a season opening 77-62 win over Adams State Friday night in the Ashbrook Classic at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
The Mustangs close out tournament play by taking on 7th-ranked Emporia State (Kan.) Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
Gober matched a career high with 18 points working to go 7-for-10 from the floor including a 3-pointer while pulling down five rebounds in 24 minutes.
 
Carter notched her 30th career double-double finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds in 26 minutes of court time. She also overtook Denise Pittman (1994-98) to move into fourth place on MSU's all-time rebounding list with 773.
 
The Mustangs took control of the game by going on a 12-0 run late in the first half turning a 15-9 deficit into a 21-15 lead on a pair of Shambreka Jones free throws with 5:46 to play in the opening half.
 
MSU pushed the lead to 12 points before intermission and stretched the advantage to 22 midway through the second half.
 
Adams State put on a press to battle back to within 13, but could never get any closer.
 
Senior guard Desiree Anderson led all scorers with 19 points knocking down three 3-pointers for the Grizzlies while senior guard Mariah Gonzales and Emilie Klint chipped in 13 points each.
 
MSU senior forward Taylor Dowd pitched in nine points off of the bench while Dianna Jones, Janae McJunkins and Destiny Means had seven points each.
 
Senior forward Shambreka Jones also delivered a big night on the glass grabbing 12 rebounds.
