WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 7-ranked Emporia State splashed in 10 3-pointers to roll past Midwestern State 62-51 Saturday night in the finale of the Ashbrook Classic at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
"We allowed them to get free too much on the outside and just didn't counter," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said.
Midwestern State, who fell to 1-1, controlled play throughout much of the first half leading by as many as seven points after
Taylor Dowd knocked down three free throws followed by a 3-pointer by
Janae McJunkins for a 21-14 edge with 7:14 remaining in the opening half.
Emporia State's Jacee Kramer answered with a 3-ball from the right wing as the Hornets closed with a 14-2 run to take a 33-26 lead into the half.
Freshman Addie Lackey pushed the ESU advantage to 10 points with a 3-pointer to open the second half at 36-26.
The Mustangs answered with a pair of free throws by
Shambreka Jones before Lackey knocked down another trey to push the lead back to double figures. It would stay that way the rest of the way.
Senior
Dianna Jones paced the Mustangs' attack with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists, while senior guard
Lisa Hampton knocked down a two 3-pointers to finish with 10 points and three rebounds.
Senior forward Amber Vandiver joined Lackey with 11 points to lead Emporia State which improved to 2-0.
Midwestern State takes on Texas Wesleyan Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
