DALLAS -- No. 18 Midwestern State was unable to inspire the effort it needed to claim a win Monday night at the Dallas Baptist Soccer Field.
DBU, on the other hand, did what it took to earn a result in fight the Mustangs to a 1-1 draw.
"It's pretty disappointing," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "Dallas Baptist played hard and you have to give them a lot of credit. No team has played us this hard the whole game. I have never seen someone work so hard in my life and that's what kept them in it."
Sophomore midfielder
Kyle Baccus struck for his second goal of the season in spectacular form right before the half to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
"The ball was bouncing and he took it off of a half volley from 40 yards out. It was incredible," Elder said. "But instead of putting it away, we let them stay in the game. This is a game we needed to win and let it get it away from us."
The Mustangs won every category on the stat page claiming a 25-15 edge in shots, 13-5 in shots on goal and an 8-5 advantage on corner kicks.
But Dallas Baptist hustled back into position and always seemed to have a body in the way to stymie the Mustangs' opportunities.
"The defense played solid and strong, but other than that no one played well today," Elder said. "Midfield was average and our forwards were average. I know we can do better and we will have to do better this weekend against West Texas A&M."
The Patriots cracked the score line on a drive from 25 yards out by Riley Alvey at the top of the box which squirted through MSU goalkeeper
Nick Petolick's grasp for the equalizer in the 72nd minute.
"In the end, we didn't finish our chances and they outworked us," Elder said.
Midwestern State (7-1-2) plays host to rival West Texas A&M Saturday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Dallas Baptist moved to 3-6-1.
