WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Paul Sunderland's free kick found its way to goal in the 101st minute to lift 13th-ranked Midwestern State to a 3-2 win over rival West Texas A&M Saturday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
"I think he was trying to cross it and just caught the goalkeeper (by surprise)," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "The guys did a great job of fighting hard to get this win. We decided we were going to go for it despite being a man down."
The Mustangs extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games despite junior forward
Albert Rodriguez drawing a red card for a hard tackle on WT defender Thomas Vickers in the 94th minute of regulation.
By then, MSU had squandered a two-goal advantage generated off of a pair of restarts.
"We just can't keep counting on restart opportunities," Elder said. "We need to get better at generating scoring chances in the run of play."
Senior midfielder
Andrew Power knocked in his fourth penalty kick of the season and 10th goal of the campaign in the 37th minute, then senior defender
Chase Robertson drilled in a free kick from 25 yards to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute.
That's when the big ball became a problem for the Mustangs.
"We were able to win those balls early in the match, but they were able to get behind us and cause some problems later in the game," Elder said.
WT's Christopher Hutton knocked in his third goal of the season off of an Axel Insulander assist in the 50th minute then Chris Johnson notched the equalizer off of Vickers' assist in the 82nd minute to send the match to overtime.
WT defender Ombrai Oguoko earned a yellow card in the first minute of the second overtime by taking down MSU junior midfielder
Ben Clarvis.
Sunderland's serve found its mark clean through the WT wall to provide the winning margin.
Midwestern State hits the road to take on Rogers State (Okla.) Wednesday afternoon in Claremore. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
