Washington, turnovers too much for Mustangs to overcome

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Angelo State's Kyle Washington rolled up 419 yards of total offense to lead the Rams to a 45-31 win over No. 16 Midwestern State Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

It was Angelo State's first win in Wichita Falls since 1999 as the Rams improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

Midwestern State turned the ball on three consecutive possessions after building a 17-7 lead after Jake Glover hit Statron Jones for a 37-yard touchdown connection with 11:03 to play in the first half.

It was the second hookup for the tandem as Jones, who finished with a career-high 132 yards on six catches, also hauled in a 23-yard score midway through the first quarter.

But it wasn't enough to overcome Washington's big night.

The junior quarterback from Humble rushed 250 yards on 24 carries and connected on 16-of-28 passes for 169 yards with three touchdowns.

The Rams defense yielded 496 yards, but forced the Mustangs into four turnovers while sacking Glover five times.

Angelo State's spun the miscues into three touchdowns on the way to outscoring the Mustangs 31-14 in the second half.

MSU sophomore running back Dante Taylor raced for a career-high 159 yards on 19 carries including a 13-yard dash for a touchdown midway through the third quarter.

Glover connected on 21-of-41 passes for 295 yards including the two TD strikes to Jones.

Talon Smith made four catches for 86 yards to pace Angelo State's receiving corps, while Ryan Byrd rushed for 81 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.

ASU senior linebacker Rush Seaver notched 15 tackles, while the MSU defense was led by senior Dayvyon Henry's 11-tackle effort.

Midwestern State hits the road to take on rival West Texas A&M Saturday at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
