Mustangs roll to 6th straight win, beat TWU 70-59

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Sophomore Nicole Smallwood ripped the nets for a season-high 13 points to lead Midwestern State to its sixth straight win as the Mustangs rolled past Texas Woman's University 70-59 Thursday night in their Lone Star Conference opener at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

MSU, which improved to 9-3 on the season, takes on Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon on the road. Tipoff at A&M-Commerce Fieldhouse is set for 2 p.m.

Smallwood, a 5-8 transfer from Missouri State, connected on a season-high three treys and has knocked five of her seven 3-pointers this season in the last two games.

Smallwood and Andrea Carter each hit 3s during an 11-3 run as the Mustangs pulled away for a 29-21 lead with 4:30 to go in the opening half before gaining a 35-26 advantage into the half.

Carter notched her fifth double-double of the season finishing with 12 points to go along with a season-high 13 rebounds.

The Mustangs pushed the lead into double figures 15 seconds into the second half and kept the Pioneers at bay before pulling away for a game-high 15-point advantage in the closing minutes.

Junior Dianna Jones delivered a solid performance from the point guard position finishing with nine points and eight assists while committing a single turnover in 27 minutes, while Kirsti Degelia added seven points and three assists to go along with four steals.

Junior forward Taylor Dowd joined Shatoia Gober with six points each, while junior Shambreka Jones battled for seven points and five rebounds in 21 minutes off of the bench.

Kenesha Saygo scored 12 points to lead the way for Texas Woman's which dropped to 4-6 on the season.
