Mustangs fall at A&M-Commerce in OT, 71-64

COMMERCE, Texas -- An ice cold shooting effort brought an end to Midwestern State's six-game winning streak Saturday afternoon as Texas A&M-Commerce came away with a 71-64 win here in overtime.

"We just did not show up shooting tonight," MSU coach Noel Johnson said. "We probably missed 15 layups. We were able to get some second chances and couldn't finish. It was about being tough and willing it in and we just couldn't do that."

The Mustangs slipped to 9-4 on the season while going to 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play. It was just the second win of the season for A&M-Commerce which improved to 2-9 and 1-1.

Midwestern State hits the road to face rival West Texas A&M Wednesday night at First United Bank Center in Canyon. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

The Lions compounded MSU's shooting woes by claiming a decisive edge on the glass on the strength of strong efforts from bigs Breanna Harris (15 points, 20 rebounds) and Abigail Leaupepe-Tele (4 points, 10 rebounds).

"They are so strong and physical. We just got pushed under and we just didn't respond," Johnson said. "It was very physical without many fouls called which was totally different that the TWU game. These kids were having a hard time adjusting to the difference."

Texas A&M-Commerce jumped out to a 14-8 lead early, but the Mustangs managed to fight through cold shooting spells to battle their way to a 28-25 lead at halftime.

The Mustangs attacked the basket at the start of the second half hitting 5-of-5 free throws to jump out to a game-high 39-32 lead on a pair of Dianna Jones free throws with 16:43 to go.
