Mustangs complete sweep of Hampton Inn-vitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State polished off a perfect weekend with a pair of sweeps over Southwestern Oklahoma and Southern Nazarene to complete the Hampton Inn-vitational at 4-0.

"The big thing is that we were able to improve throughout the weekend," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "This is a very coachable group of girls. I'm looking forward to seeing how we develop from this point on."

For the second straight day, the Mustangs shook off a slow start, but recovered from a 6-point deficit against previously unbeaten SWOSU behind a 12-kill, flawless effort by senior right-side hitter Michelle Blount in Saturday's opener at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"We were a little apprehensive and were just overplaying from the start," Flores-Stafford said after the Mustangs claimed a 30-28, 25-16, 25-19 win. "It has taken 4 to 6 points to get into the game. They were over thinking and trying too hard in front of the home crowd. Then they settled into just playing volleyball."

Once the Mustangs settled in, the attack clicked at a .258 rate as senior Caitlin Wallace added 10 kills with just a single error while Marija Jovanovic and Marissa Olivares pitched in nine and eight kills, respectively against the Bulldogs.

Jovanovic completed a solid all-around effort with a team-best 20 set assists and eight digs while freshman Sarah Rosinke notched a double-double with 15 set assists and 14 digs.

Wallace also had a hand in five of MSU's eight blocks as the Mustangs forced Southwestern Oklahoma into 21 attack errors.

Junior Kaitlyn Molloy led back row efforts with 19 digs to go along with five kills, three blocks and two service aces, while junior libero Casey Fletcher pitched in 16 digs.

Midwestern took control from the outset in the tournament finale rolling to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 victory over Southern Nazarene.

Wallace needed just two sets to slam a team-high 11 kills, while Olivares and Beatriz Villalba added nine and seven kills, respectively.

Rosinke (24 set assists, seven digs) and Jovanovic (13 set assists, five digs, four kills) paced the Mustangs to overall .274 hitting percentage, while MSU limited Southern Nazarene to a .071 team hitting percentage led by Molloy, who notched 10 digs and two blocks.

Fletcher paced back row effort with 12 digs.

Midwestern State competes in the Heartland/LSC Crossover next weekend in Lubbock. The Mustangs take on St. Mary's (Texas) and Texas-Permian Basin Friday before closing the tournament with matches against Texas A&M International and Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
