Mustangs open season a strong 2-0 at Hampton Inn-vitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs opened the 2013 season on a high note by winning both of their matches in the Hampton Inn-vitational at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Friday.

MSU defeated McMurry 3-1 to open the season, then swept Northwestern Oklahoma State 3-0 to start the season at 2-0.

MSU 3, McMURRY 1

The Mustangs dropped the opening set to the War Hawks 23-25, then roared back to claim the next three 25-17, 25-12 and 25-22.

MSU (1-0) was led on the attack by senior Beatriz Villalba, who chalked up 12 kills while hitting .290 on 31 attempts.

Senior Caitlin Wallace added nine kills with three blocks, while sophomore Marissa Olivares also tallied nine kills.

Freshman Sarah Rosinke tallied 24 assists for MSU.

McMurry (0-1) was paced by Petyon Evans with nine kills and a .280 hitting percentage, while leading the team with 25 assists.

Kelsey Harkins added eight kills for McMurry as Kasi Conners posted four blocks.

MSU 3, NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA 0

The Mustangs (2-0) were never really in danger with the straight sets 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 win over the Rangers (0-2).

Junior Kaitlyn Molloy hit .600 with 11 kills for the contest, with two blocks and three service aces.

Senior transfer Marija Jovanovic led the team with 20 assists, with three aces of her own.

Beatriz Villalba added nine kills for the contest for MSU, while senior Michelle Blount posted seven kills.

The Rangers got 11 kills from Hayley Brittain, who led the team with a .444 hitting percentage, while Elisa Bentson added seven kills.

NWOSU's Kaydee Yukawa recorded 13 assists for the Rangers, with Tiana Barnett adding 11.

Play in the Hampton Inn-vitational continues on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

Midwestern State faces Southwestern Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. at Ligon Coliseum and will close the tournament against Southern Nazarene at 3 p.m.
