Mustangs hold on for 3-2 win over East Central

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State constructed a big advantage then hung on for a 3-2 win over East Central (Okla.) Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

It was the second straight win for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-2 on the season.

Midwestern continues a four-match home stand Sunday as the Mustangs play host to Rogers State (Okla.) at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Freshman Nicole Coetzer took a through ball from Kensli Pounds in the 32nd minute and beat ECU starting goalkeeper Taylor Lowe from the right wing to the far post to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.

MSU stayed on the attack throughout the opening half controlling a 16-4 shot advantages while creating numerous quality opportunities deep in offensive third.

Senior midfielder Tatyanny Griffiths converted a short cross in the box from Emily Saville in the 39th minutes to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead going into intermission.

Reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week Ashley Cottrell pushed the advantage to 3-0 converted a through ball up the center of the field from Carina Dunnahoo in the 66th minute. It was her team-high third tally of the season after notching a pair of goals in MSU 3-0 win last weekend over Oklahoma Christian.

But the winless Lady Tigers showed some fight before falling to 0-6 on the season.

Freshman forward Kourtney Holleman blasted in her team-best third goal of the season in the 83rd minute and Krista Kahl pulled ECU within a goal in the 85th minute after Midwestern defender Abbey Barnum pulled down forward from behind MIlan Galloway in the box to earn a yellow card.

But Midwestern recovered to finish off the victory.

Senior Kallie Essary made a season-high seven saves and did not allow a goal in 71 minutes to earn the win in goal for the Mustangs.
