Midwestern State wins third straight, rolls past Hillcats 3-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State dominated the run of play rolling past Rogers State 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

The win was the third straight for the Mustangs who improved to 4-2 on the season. Midwestern opens Lone Star Conference play Thursday night at home against Angelo State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sophomore Kensli Pounds ignited the MSU effort in the first half taking a through ball down the right wing in 17th minute. She hammered a shot off of Rogers State goalkeeper Jordan Harris, recovered the rebound and tapped in the rebound for her second goal of the season.

Midwestern continued to control the run of play controlling a 12-5 shot edge, but was unable to expand the advantage.

The Mustangs continued with the pressure in the second half extended to a two-goal advantage when sophomore forward Ashley Cottrell served a short cross to freshman midfielder Lizzie Navarette, who knocked in her first collegiate goal to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

Rogers State rallied for a bounding goal by Tara Garrett in the 80th minute off of a turnover in the MSU defensive third to pull within a goal.

Midwestern countered by reinserting the majority of its starters which resulted in a put away tally in the 88th minute after sophomore midfielder Morgan Hannon was pulled down in the box.

Hannon served the penalty kick to the right corner of the net to salt away the victory.

MSU finished the contest with a 27-6 advantage in shots while placing 12 on goal.

Rogers State fell to 0-5 on the season.
