WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The ball just didn't bounce Midwestern State's way Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Because of it, the Mustangs dropped a tough 2-1 decision to St. Edward's in double overtime to fall to 1-3.
"I am really disappointed for our guys," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "They did everything we told them to do to win. Soccer is a cruel sport."
The Hilltoppers used a goal by Andrew Fox in the 103rd minute to come away with the victory to improve to 2-1-1 on the season, but had to dodge several quality scoring opportunities by MSU.
"We really took it to them for a good 30-minute stretch and forced them into playing kick ball," Elder said. "I was proud of the intensity and the emotion we displayed tonight."
The Mustangs drew first blood when junior forward
Len Smith blasted in his first goal of the season off of a throw-in by
Chase Robertson in the 34th minute. Then Midwestern turned it up in the second half and into the first overtime outshooting the Hilltoppers 11-3 over the 55-minute stretch of soccer.
But St. Edward's was able to notch the equalizer on a Daniel Riley header off of a corner kick in the 50th minute then claimed the victory when Fox corralled a pass from Nate Coons in the opening minute of the second overtime period.
Midwestern State dipped to 1-3 for the just the second time since 1973 while dropping its first two home matches of the season for the first time in program history. The 1999 squad recovered to roll to 13-5-3 mark and claimed the Lone Star Conference championship after suffering defeats in three of its first four matches.
The Mustangs play host to Rogers State Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
