Smith nets two to lead Mustangs past Rogers State, 2-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Junior forward Len Smith tallied two goals to lead Midwestern State to a 2-0 win over Rogers State Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

"We bounced back better mentally than I thought we were going to," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "We've talked about attitude, toughness and tradition while playing on a hot Sunday afternoon. We pretty much had to win today. This was really good for us."

It was the first home victory of the season for the Mustangs, who had dropped tough decisions to Fort Lewis (Colo.) and St. Edward's.

MSU (2-3) takes on Newman (Kan.) Friday night at home. The start time is to be announced.

Smith, a first-team All-Lone Star Conference performer a season ago, erupted for his three goals of the season over the weekend after notching a team-high 10 last fall.

He was the benefactor of a pair of nice passes in the 38th minute. Senior Griff Stratford served a cross to from the right wing to an open Idi Camara who tapped a follow pass to a wide open Smith to give the Mustangs the first goal of the contest.

The Mustangs held on to a one-goal lead heading into intermission despite dominating play with a 15-5 shot advantage placing four shots on goal.

"I wish we could have finished more of our opportunities," Elder said. "Through my years, I've learned as long as you keep creating the chances that it doesn't stay like this. You are going to have breakout games."

MSU continued creating quality chances in the second half to take a two-goal lead when Smith headed a solid cross by Chase Robertson from the right wing in the 50th minute.

The Mustangs limited RSU to seven shots as sophomore goalkeeper Nick Petolick notched a shutout in his first start of the season while making a pair of saves.

"We're happy with the win," Elder said. "After going 1-3, any win is exciting right now. Hopefully we can roll from here."

Rogers State took its third straight loss to fall to 1-4.
