Wall sparks Mustangs to 3-2 comeback win over UTPB in Game 1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- With Midwestern State down to its last strike in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park against Texas-Permian Basin, Chelsey Wall delivered.

The freshman from Keller's third home run of the season - a two-run shot to left field in the seventh inning - sent the game to extra innings before Haley Howerton's sacrifice fly scored Laci Belovsky with the winning run to give the Mustangs a 3-2 win in eight innings.

Texas Permian Basin had managed a pair of solo homers by Chelsey Morgan and Nikki Brailford to take a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning.

The advantage looked to be enough for UTPB starter Desiree Valero, who limited the Mustangs to five hits over the first six innings without ever extending to a three-ball count.

Valero appeared to work though Courtney Bingham's one-out double to left field getting Christina Roosmalen to swing and miss at a 1-2 rise ball to get the Mustangs down to their final out.

But Wall fouled off two pitches then connected on the game-tying blast to left field to force extra innings.

Then in the eighth, Kim Jerrick reached on a bunt single to move Belovsky, who had been placed on second for the international tiebreaker, to third. Howerton followed with a towering fly ball to center field to plate the winning run.

MSU starter Kat Batey allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings to earn the win to improve to 12-5. The Plano Senior High product notched five strikeouts and walked one.

The Mustangs improved to 30-12 on the season while Texas-Permian Basin slipped to 10-29.
