Midwestern rocks Falcons 8-0 in Game 2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State crushed three homers including a walk-off grand slam by Katelyn Vinson to roll to an 8-0 run-rule win over Texas-Permian Basin in five innings of Game 2 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs, who have now won seven of their last eight, improved to 31-12 on the season while UTPB dropped to 10-30.

Vinson's 14th homer of the season also helped the Mustangs break a program single-season record with the team's 61st long ball of the season which is one better than the 2011 squad.

MSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Vinson sacrifice fly in the first inning then extended the advantage to 2-0 on the strength of Courtney Bingham's third homer of the season in the third frame.

Freshman shortstop Shelby Carter tacked on her ninth homer of the season with another solo shot in the fourth before the Mustangs erupted for five runs in the fifth.

Laci Belovsky stroked a leadoff double to left field then UTPB reliever Janessa Martinez hit consecutive batters to load the bases. Bingham pushed across a run on an infield single before sophomore third baseman Kelley Schaefer was robbed of extra bases on a nice diving grab by Texas-Permian Basin left fielder Taleas Marble.

Then Vinson waited on a 3-2 slow change-up and clubbed it over the left-field fence to end the game.

Belovsky notched her Lone Star Conference leading fifth shutout of the season to improve to 19-7. The freshman from Grangerland allowed four hits while striking out four and walking one in five innings.

Bingham paced MSU's seven-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

The Mustangs return to LSC play with a weekend series against Tarleton State in Stephenville. The teams play a pair of games Friday night beginning at 5 p.m. before facing off in a single game Saturday at noon.
