Mustangs rally past #7 Texas Woman's 4-3 in 8

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Chelsey Wall's run-scoring single through the left side of the infield in the eighth inning capped off Midwestern State's 4-3 come-from-behind win over No. 7 Texas Woman's University Friday night at Mustangs Park.

It was MSU's fourth consecutive victory as the Mustangs improved to 28-11 on the season and to 7-6 in Lone Star Conference. The win snapped TWU's seven-game winning as the Pioneer had won 23 of 25 games heading into the weekend series.

The teams close out the three-game set with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for noon.

Midwestern jumped out to the early against Texas Woman's ace Larissa Garcia. Haley Howerton legged out the first of her team-high three hits with a bunt single in the first inning, stole second and scored on Kelley Schaefer single to the right-field gap to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Garcia, a senior right hander, changed speeds well to keep MSU off balance throughout much of the night allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks but would not factor in the decision.

TWU senior outfielder Katie Hines staked her to a 3-1 lead on her league leading 19th homer - a three-run blast to left field in the fifth.

Midwestern State's Katelyn Vinson answered the blast with a shot of her own in the sixth. Her 12th homer of the season extended a season-best hitting streak to 11 games. Vinson has accounted for nine long balls in eight games during the streak which includes 10 multiple-hit games.

TWU brought on reliever Brandie Lander to close out the game in the seventh, but Carey Campbell drew leadoff walk and Howerton reached on an infield single before Schaefer chased in the tying run on a single to left field. Vinson followed with a safety to center but Howerton was gunned down at the plate by Pioneer center fielder Amanda Ruiz.

The Mustangs took advantage of a dropped foul pop-up to first base in the eighth as Shelby Carter followed with a solid double to the right-field gap, was sacrificed to third and scored on Wall's single through the infield.

Freshman Laci Belovsky allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking three to improve to 17-7 on the season, while Lander fell to 14-4.

Schaefer, Vinson and Wall added two hits each as MSU totaled 12 hits, while Ruiz and Hines combined for eight of TWU's nine hits.

The Pioneers fell to 33-8 overall and to 11-2 in league play.
