Vinson, Belovsky spur Mustangs past Cameron 8-0 in series finale

LAWTON, Okla. -- Freshman Katelyn Vinson hit two homers and Laci Belovsky weaved her Lone Star Conference leading seventh shutout of the season to lift No. 17 Midwestern State to an 8-0 win over Cameron in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at Cameron Field.

Vinson became the first player in MSU program history to stroke 20 homers in a season delivering a three-run blast in the third inning and a solo shot in the seventh to help the Mustangs improve to 39-13 on the season and to 16-8 in league play.

The Southlake product connected on 15 of her 20 home runs over her last 20 games and remains one ahead of teammate Kim Jerrick, who struck for her 19th homer of the season in Game 1 Wednesday at Cameron.

The Mustangs remain second in NCAA Division II behind Humboldt State with now 79 home runs this season. The Lady Jacks have amassed 88 homers this season. MSU needs 12 more long balls to match the all-time LSC mark of 91 set by Angelo State in 2009.

The Mustangs drew first blood on Courtney Bingham's RBI-single up the middle in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Bingham started a two-out rally in the third with a single to right field before Kelley Schaefer singled through the left side to set up Vinson's 19th homer of the season over the left-field fence to advance the MSU lead to 4-0.

The Mustangs tacked on three more runs in the fifth highlighted by Christina Roosmalen's two-run single up the middle to push the advantage to 7-0 before Vinson closed out scoring with a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh.

Belovsky scattered seven hits and fanned two to improve to 23-7 on the season.

Bingham and Vinson paced a 13-hit MSU attack with three safeties each while Roosmalen and Chelsey Wall had two hits each.

The Mustangs improved to 39-13 on the season and 16-8 in league play while Cameron dropped to 14-30 and 7-17.
