Mustangs bash way to twin bill sweep of Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Midwestern State played its own version of home run derby while sweeping a twin bill against Henderson State (Ark.) by scores of 10-5 and 10-1 in five innings Tuesday afternoon at Dee White Field.

The Mustangs connected on a pair of homers in the opener before slugging a program record five long balls in the second game to improve to 27-11 on the season.

Freshman shortstop Shelby Carter cranked a three-run shot as part of a five-run first inning in Game 1 to kick start the Mustangs as Kelley Schaefer broke out of a slump with a two-run single as the first of her three hits in the game.

Henderson State used back-to-back homers by Hali Kizer and Sarah Gipson in the third inning to pull to within 5-3, but MSU freshman Katelyn Vinson keyed a three-run fourth with a two-run single to left field to push the lead to 8-3.

Schaefer tacked on a solo homer to center field in the sixth while starting pitcher Laci Belovsky drove in another run with a double down the left-field line in the seventh.

Belovsky improved to 16-7 in the circle yielding five earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

The Mustangs erupted for three, two-run homers by Courtney Bingham, Vinson and Kim Jerrick as part of a seven-run breakout in the fourth inning of the night cap.

Schaefer tacked on another two-run bomb and Carter bashed a solo shot to close out the scoring in the fifth inning.

Freshman Kat  Batey claimed her fourth straight victory in the circle to improve to 11-4. She allowed one run on eight hits while strikeout out four in five innings.

Midwestern State returns to Lone Star Conference play this weekend against Texas Woman's University. The teams play a single game Friday at 7 p.m. before closing the three-game set with a twin bill Saturday at noon. All games are set for Mustangs Park.
