No. 24 Midwestern State rips No. 44 St. Mary's 7-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 24-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs picked up their second straight win and seventh in the last eight matches as they dispatched No. 44 St. Mary's 7-2 Monday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs rolled to 13-5 overall with the win, while the Rattlers dropped to 10-8.

"We came on strong and played great singles," said MSU coach Scott Linn.  "This was the first time we came out down 2-1 and won handily.  Great job."

The Mustangs got their only doubles point at the top, as the ninth-ranked duo of Luke Joyce and Colby Meeks put away the Rattlers' Zach Nicholson and Brien Galon 8-3.

The Mustangs seniors also won their singles points by just winning a set.  Joyce, ranked 44th nationally, led Andrej Klipa 6-3 when Klipa retired from the match, and Meeks, playing at No. 2, won a hard-fought 7-6 first set and was up 2-1 in the second when Nicholson also retired.

That was part of the solid sweep by the Mustangs.

Meeks and Kacper Boborykin, playing at No. 3 and No. 4 for Midwestern, rolled to 6-0, 6-2 wins.  Meeks downed Jared Fellows, while Boborykin took out Carlos Olea.

Franko Siljeg beat Galon at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1, and Austin Crawford handed Matt Banner a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 6.

"We showed our determination today," said Linn.

The only points for the Rattlers came in doubles, as both the Nos. 2 and 3 points were decided 9-7.  Davidson/Crawford fell to Fellows/Banner at No. 2, while Tomas Grejtak and Zack Santagate lost to Klipa/Olea.

The Mustangs are off until Friday at 2 p.m., when they travel to Topeka, Kan., to face Washburn.
