PORTALES, N.M. -- Midwestern State's
Katelyn Vinson belted a grand slam and
Kim Jerrick blasted a three-run shot as the Mustangs pushed across 10 runs in the sixth inning to force their sixth consecutive run-rule victory in a 15-5 win over Eastern New Mexico Friday afternoon at Zia Field.
MSU pushed its winning streak to eight games as the Mustangs have won 13 of their last 14 games to move to 18-4 on the season and to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
Eastern New Mexico worked the bases loaded in the first inning on MSU starter Kat Batey, who came within one strike of working her way out of the jam. But ENMU's Marley Pinnon lined a 1-2 offering over the fence to give the Zias the early 4-0 lead.
Batey settled in to allow just one more run on three hits over the next 3 2/3 innings, but would not factor in the decision. Freshman
Laci Belovsky hurled a perfect 1 1/3 with two strikeouts to get the win in relief to improve to 11-2.
The Mustangs battled back with three runs in the third keyed by
Courtney Bingham's RBI-double to the left-field gap and
Christina Roosmalen's run-scoring single through the left side of the infield to cut the margin to 4-3.
MSU pulled ahead with two runs in the fourth when
Shelby Carter's sacrifice fly plated Jerrick to give the Mustangs a 5-4 advantage.
Midwestern exploded for 10 runs on six hits including the home runs by Vinson and Jerrick to put the game away in the sixth.
The Mustangs and Zias close the series Saturday afternoon with a single game at 1 p.m.
