PORTALES, N.M. -- No. 22-ranked Midwestern State drilled Eastern New Mexico 10-2 in five innings complete its seventh consecutive run-rule victory Saturday afternoon at Zia Field.
Â
The Mustangs improved to 19-4 on the season and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play in winning their season-best ninth-straight game. MSU has now won 14 of its last 15 games.
Â
Sophomore third baseman
Kelley Schaefer extended her team-best hitting streak to seven games by blasting her fifth homer of the season with a three-run shot to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Â
MSU extended its lead to 6-0 after freshman shortstop
Shelby Carter drove in two more unearned runs on a double to right field in the second innings.
Â
Eastern New Mexico retaliated with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but that's all the Zias could manage off of MSU starter
Laci Belovsky.
Â
Belovsky improved to 12-2 on the campaign allowing one earned run on five hits in the five inning complete game. The freshman from Grangerland notched five strikeouts and walked one.
Â
Junior catcher
Kim Jerrick belted her ninth homer of the season with a three-run shot in the third inning to push the MSU lead to 9-2 in the third before senior outfielder
Courtney Bingham forced the run-rule with an RBI-double in the fifth.
Â
Jerrick and Bingham paced the Mustangs' 10-hit attack with two safeties each.
Â
Midwestern plays host to No. 3 West Texas A&M for a three-game set next weekend at Mustangs Park. The rivals play a single game Friday at 7 p.m. before squaring off for a twin bill Saturday beginning at noon.
