#22 Midwestern pounds Zias 9-1 in LSC opener

PORTALES, N.M. -- No. 22 Midwestern State rolled to its fifth consecutive run-rule win blasting Eastern New Mexico 9-1 in its Lone Star Conference opener Friday afternoon at Zia Field.

Kelley Schaefer, Shelby Carter and Kaitlyn Vinson all belted home runs for the Mustangs, who claimed their seventh consecutive win and 12th victory in their last 13 games to move to 17-4 on the season.

Freshman pitcher Laci Bolovsky allowed just one hit - a solo home run by Jacqueline Candelaria to lead off the third inning - while improving to 10-2 in the circle. The Grangerland product notched six strikeouts and permitted one walk.

Schaefer gave MSU a 2-0 advantage after launching her fourth homer of the season over the left field fence in the first inning.

Freshman left fielder Haley Howerton highlighted a three-run second for the Mustangs with a two-run double to the left-field gap to push the MSU lead to 4-0.

Carter and Vinson delivered two-run blasts to spur a five-run fifth inning to account for each of their second long balls of the season.

Eastern New Mexico dropped to 6-19 on the season.
