LAWTON, Okla. – The 24th-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs five-match winning streak came to an end on Thursday as the 19th-ranked Cameron Aggies beat the Mustangs 6-3 at the Streich-Henry Tennis Center.
The Mustangs fell to 11-5 overall and closed their Lone Star Conference regular season at 1-2. Cameron improved to 15-2 and opened its LSC season 1-0.
"This was a tough one," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. "We started a little flat, but we did finish strong, so that's a good sign."
Midwestern used the play of the top doubles duo in the region, No. 9
Luke Joyce and
Colby Meeks to win at No. 1 over Cameron's Duje Janjic and Angelo Lencioni 8-6.
"Luke and Colby came out once again, what more can you say," said Linn.
MSU also got wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as
Kacper Boborykin beat Jorge Gerosi 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 4, while
Franko Siljeg won at No. 5 over Lencioni 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
However, MSU allowed CU to get the upper hand in doubles. The No. 2 team of
Kyle Davidson and
Austin Crawford slipped to Nicolai Ferrigno and Dean Weigelt 8-5, while
Tomas Grejtak and
Zack Santagate dropped a heartbreaker at No. 3 to Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazendiero in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5).
The Aggies won the top three spots in singles as well as the last position.
No. 20 Ferrigno beat the Mustangs Joyce, ranked 44th, 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 1, as Janjic beat Meeks 6-4, 6-2 for the point at No. 2. Davidson fell at No. 3 to Merdan 7-6, 6-1 and
Austin Crawford was downed by CU's Fazendiero 6-2, 6-2.
The Mustangs next visit Arkansas-Fort Smith in a non-conference match on Friday at 1:30.
