Rambelles send MSU to 5th-straight loss, 4-3

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Brittney Davis' pinch-hit, run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning pulled Angelo State past No. 19 Midwestern State 4-3 in Game 1 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
 
The Rambelles (22-8, 7-1) plated a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to overcome a 3-1 deficit to send Midwestern to its fifth straight loss as the Mustangs fell to 20-9 and 4-4 in league play.
 
MSU jumped on Angelo State starter Sandra Serna for two runs in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of a Courtney Bingham sacrifice fly and Kelley Schaefer's RBI-single down the left-field line to score Kim Jerrick and Haley Howerton who had reached on an HBP and a walk, respectively.
 
Midwestern State freshman designated player Katelyn Vinson launched her fourth homer of the season in the second to push the Mustangs' advantage to 3-1.
 
But Serna settled in to limit the Mustangs to three hits the rest of the way in five shutout innings to improve to 13-2 on the season.
 
The Rambelles cut the MSU margin to 3-2 in the fifth as Lanie Robinson stroked a leadoff double down the left-field line then came in to score on Carly Peters' RBI single to right field.
 
ASU surged past the Mustangs with two runs on three hits in the in the sixth.
 
Midwestern stranded nine runners leaving the bases loaded in the third and sixth innings.
 
Freshman Kat Batey took the loss in the circle falling to 7-4 on the season. She allowed four runs -- all earned -- on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
 
Schaefer and Vinson paced MSU's six-hit attack with two hits each.
