Big start propels Mustangs past Northeastern State 13-5 in 6

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State erupted for 10 runs in the first inning to call to a 13-5 run-rule in over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon in the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs relentless attack pounded out eight hits to post double-digit runs in the opening frame with big knocks delivered on a Kelley Schaefer grand slam, a three-run shot by Katelyn Vinson and a three-run triple by Courtney Bingham.

That was all after Northeastern State pounced on MSU starter Kat Batey for three runs in the top of the inning on run-scoring doubles by Megan Robison and Navada Campos while Allyson Pogue tacked on an RBI single.

Batey settled in to allow two more runs on four hits over her final five innings of work to improve to 6-2 on the season, but the RiverHawks weren't so fortunate.

Starter Alex Files took the brunt of the damage in the first as she was unable to retire any of the six batter she faced as all six would score - five earned before Vinson welcomed reliever Cayce Coleman with a three-run homer.

Coleman last two innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking four before giving way to Kyle Cole, who settled in to permit one earned run on two hits over three innings.

Bingham polished off a 5-RBI performance by driving in two more runs on a double to the right-field gap in the fourth inning and senior second baseman Carey Campbell ended the game with her second homer of the season over the left-center fence to lead off the bottom of the sixth.

It was MSU's third consecutive game with at least 10 runs and fifth double-digit outburst of the season.
