WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State had it all clicking Saturday against St. Mary's (Texas) at the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs put pitching and defense together behind
Laci Belovsky's first collegiate no-hitter while still finding time at the plate for an 8-0 run victory in five innings over the Rattlers.
The freshman from Grangerland delivered the fifth no-no in program history while becoming just the third pitcher to perform the feat. Former All-American Katie Petersen notched three career perfect games with one at Southwestern Oklahoma in 2009 and two at home against Western New Mexico and East Central in 2010. Kristina Gutierrez had the other in a 1-0 win in five innings over Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 8, 2011.
Freshman shortstop
Shelby Carter leaped high to snare two line drives while senior
Elena Bennett ranged to make a pair of sliding catches in center field. Senior second baseman
Carey Campbell flagged down a hard-hit line drive and made a great play to her right to nab a well-hit grounder up the middle.
Belovsky permitted three walks and threw 68 pitches while improving to 8-2 on the season.
Midwestern State struck for a run in the first inning when
Kelley Schaefer's single to left field plated Bennett for a 1-0.
The Mustangs took advantage of a pair of St. Mary's throwing errors to plate four unearned runs on the way to a seven spot. Schaefer drove in two more runs with a single through the right side while
Kim Jerrick and
Christina Roosmalen produced single RBIs.
Jerrick's program-best 23-game hitting streak came to an end as she went 0-for-2 with a bases loaded walk.
Freshman designated player
Katelyn Vinson extended her hitting streak to five games by going 3-for-3 while senior outfielder
Courtney Bingham has recorded a hit in nine consecutive games after going 2-for3 with a run scored.
Haley Howerton and Schaefer added two hits as MSU slugged out 10 safeties for the game.
St. Mary's ace Vainna Gutierrez took the loss to fall to 5-5 on the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Midwestern State closes out tournament play Sunday with games against Oklahoma Panhandle State and Northeastern State (Okla.) at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
