Midwestern drops 5-4 decision to Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 10 Oklahoma Christian handed No. 31 Midwestern State its second straight loss on Saturday, as the Eagles edged the Mustangs 5-4 at the MSU Tennis Center.

Midwestern (4-2) battled OC (6-1), last season's NAIA national champion OC (6-1) who is transitioning into NCAA Division II and the Heartland Conference, but dropping two of the three doubles points proved costly.

Colby Meeks had the strong day for the Mustangs, collecting a pair of wins.

Meeks teamed with Luke Joyce at No. 1 doubles to pull off an 8-5 victory against the eighth-ranked team of Bruno Tiberti and Martin Poboril.  He then downed Josip Smoljan 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

"Colby Meeks was very strong today," said MSU Coach Scott Linn.  "He did all the right things he needed to do to win today.  He gave us a great chance as a team."

The Mustangs also collected points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles as Franko Siljeg beat Nicolas Auruccio 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 and Kacper Boborykin went three to down Paulo Roessle 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 at No. 6.

However, OC controlled the doubles with a pair of 8-5 wins, as MSU's Kyle Davidson and Siljeg fell to Julio Pulido and Auruccio at No. 2 and Tomas Grejtak and Austin Crawford lost to Roessle and Smoljan at No. 3.

No. 41 Bruno Tiberti of OC handed MSU's No. 39 Luke Joyce a 6-0, 6-2 loss at No. 1, with OC's No. 33 Poboril taking Davidson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.  Crawford also fell at No. 4 to OC's Pulido 6-3, 6-4.

The loss closed MSU's five match homestand.  The Mustangs play again Tuesday at Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla., in a 4 p.m. match.  It is the makeup for the rain-halted contest with the Savage Storm on Feb. 9 in Plano.
