Hilltoppers rally past MSU, 8-6

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- St. Edward's plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim an 8-6 win over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon in the Javelina Softball Classic at Hubert Field.

The Mustangs (5-3) close weekend play with games against St. Edward's and Texas A&M International Sunday at 9 and 11:30 a.m.

Junior catcher Kim Jerrick continued her torrid pace at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Mustangs built an early 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.

MSU drew first blood when Kelley Schaefer plated Courtney Bingham with run-scoring single up the middle in the third then Chelsey Wall keyed a three-run outburst in the fourth with a two-run pinch-hit single to center field.

But the Hilltoppers responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame. Faith Roberts' two-run triple was the key hit in the rally as SEU knotted the game at 4-4.

Schaefer ignited a rally in the fifth leading off the frame with a double to the right-field gap then moved to third on a Shelby Carter single. Katelyn Vinson delivered a sacrifice fly to center field as MSU reclaimed a 5-4 advantage.

But St. Edward's rallied four run on four hits in the sixth keyed by Cydney Ervin's two-run triple to give the Hilltoppers an 8-5 advantage.

Bingham got the Mustangs started leading off the seventh with a double to center field then stole third. Schaefer drew walk but was forced out at second when Carter reached and drove in Bingham on a fielder's choice.

Vinson delivered a two-single single through the left side of the infield but SEU starter Sarah Debrow stranded two Mustangs to end the threat and the game.

Debrow improved to 3-1 allowing six runs - all earned - on 14 hits with three strikeouts and one walk while MSU starter Laci Belovsky was sadder with the loss to fall to 2-2. Belovsky allowed eight runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
