KINGSVILLE, Texas -- Carey Campbell's sacrifice fly scored
Katelyn Vinson in the eighth inning to lift Midwestern State to a 5-4 win over St. Edward's Sunday morning in the Javelina Softball Classic at Hubert Field.
MSU freshman
Laci Belovsky came on for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to improve to 3-2 on the season after the Hilltoppers rallied to tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Mustangs jumped out to a lead in the top of the first when
Elena Bennett reached on an infield single, stole second then came around to score on
Kelley Schaefer's RBI-single to center field.
Senior first baseman
Christina Roosmalen blasted her second home run of the weekend for a two-run shot to stretch the lead to 3-0 in the third inning before
Kim Jerrick launched her fourth homer of the season to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead in the fourth.
MSU starter
Katherine Batey permitted just five base runners over her first four innings of work, but St. Edward's rallied in the fifth.
Batey hit SEU 9-hole hitter Marisa Bogart with a pitch to lead off of the inning and Cydney Ervin reached on a bunt single. The two advanced to second and third on Kaci Olson sacrifice bunt and Bogart scored on Marissa Thome's RBI groundout to cut the lead to 4-1.
Batey issued a two-out walk to Faith Roberts then Ally Valdez continued the rally with an RBI single up the middle before Brianna Bozon drew a walk to load the bases.
Pinch hitter Kyli Herman greeted Belovsky with a two-run single to center field to tie the game at 4-4.
The teams exchanged scoreless frames over the next two innings, but MSU was able to produce a run under the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth.
Vinson, who was placed on second to begin the inning, advanced to third on
Haley Howerton's sacrifice bunt then scored on Campbell's sacrifice fly to left field.
Midwestern State improved to 6-3 on the season while St. Edward's fell to 6-2.
