PHOENIX -- Kayla Henry's two-out single to left field drove in the lone run to lift Grand Canyon to a 1-0 win over Midwestern State Sunday afternoon in the GCU Invitational at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 3-2 on the season. MSU closes out tournament play against Western New Mexico this afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
GCU junior starting pitcher Stephanie Pesqueira scattered six hits and struck out seven to improve to 2-0 on the season and accounted for the only run of the game.
Pesqueira roped a leadoff double to the right-field gap in the fourth inning then advanced to third on Stephanie Smith's sacrifice bunt before Henry looped a two-out safety to left field to plate the run.
The run marred another standout performance by Midwestern freshman
Laci Belovsky, who allowed just the one run on six hits while fanning one and walking two to fall to 2-1 in the circle.
The Mustangs threatened in the top of the fifth inning when
Carey Campbell lined a two-out single to left field and
Kim Jerrick followed with a ringing double to left, but Pesqueira induced
Elena Bennett to pop out to right field to end the threat.
Jerrick notched three hits to lead the Mustangs while Pesqueira went 2-for-3 with a double to pace Grand Canyon.
