PHOENIX -- Midwestern State junior
Kim Jerrick belted two home runs and matched a school single-game record by driving in six runs to lead the Mustangs to a 7-6 win over Western New Mexico in the finale of the GCU Invitational Sunday afternoon at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
Â
The Belle Plaine, Kan. native also became the first player in MSU history to hit multiple homers three times in her career. Jerrick previously accomplished the feat against St. Edward's in 2011 and at Henderson State in 2012.
Â
The catcher blistered the six-game tourney at the play hitting .600 (12-for-20) with four doubles and three homers while driving in 11 runs for a stellar 1.250 slugging percentage. The 6-RBI matched former standout Kristen Stonecipher, who notched six RBIs on consecutive days against Southern Arkansas and Texas Woman's on Feb. 2-3, 2007.
Â
Jerrick's first homer - a two-run blast to left field - erased an early 2-0 deficit by driving in
Carey Campbell, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Elena Bennett followed with a bunt single then scored on
Courtney Bingham's run-scoring single to right field to give the Mustangs their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Â
MSU loaded the bases in the fourth as
Shelby Carter single to center field,
Katelyn Vinson reached on an error and Campbell legged out an infield single to set up Jerrick's second career grand slam for a 7-2 lead.
Â
But Western New Mexico wouldn't go away as it tagged MSU starter
Katherine Batey for six earned runs on 13 hits in five innings.
Â
WNMU's Tessa Fanning struck for a two-run homer in the fifth inning while Stephanie Higgins and Mary Othon drove in runs in the sixth to cut Midwestern's advantage to a single run at 7-6.
Â
MSU's
Laci Belovsky came on to allow two hits and strike out two over the final two innings to earn her first collegiate save.
Â
Jerrick singled to center field in the bottom of the sixth to finish 3-for-3 while
Courtney Bingham and Carter pitched in two hits each.
Â
Midwestern State competes in the Texas A&M-Kingsville Invitational next weekend. The Mustangs battled Texas A&M International and St. Edward's on each day of the tournament.
