Mustangs to host Courtyard by Marriott Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State plays host to a six-team, 15-game Courtyard by Marriott Invitational the weekend at Mustangs Park.
 
The tournament features five games on Friday beginning at 11 a.m., six games on Saturday and four games on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. both days.
 
The tournament champion will be decided by the best overall record with descending tiebreakers of head-to-head results, runs allowed then runs scored.

RANKINGS: MSU is receiving votes in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25.

STREAK: The Mustangs have won six of their last seven games including a 4-1 showing last time out at the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational.

WHO'S HOT?  Junior catcher Kim Jerrick is riding a 21-game hitting streak dating back to last season in to the weekend. The Belle Plaine, Kan. native leads the LSC in batting average (.551) and home runs (5) and is second in runs scored (19), RBIs (22) and total bases (49). She is also third with 27 hits and seven doubles. Senior center fielder Elena Bennett is hitting .522 with 16 runs scored and 15 stolen while sophomore third baseman Kelley Schaefer boasts a .467 average with three doubles, a homer and 15 RBIs. MSU leads the Lone Star Conference with a .377 team batting average with seven players hitting at least .300.

IN THE CIRCLE... Freshman Laci Belovsky is 6-2 with a 2.37 ERA while fellow frosh Kat Batey is 5-2 with a 5.87 ERA.
 
ABILENE CHRISTIAN

RANKINGS: ACU is ranked 23rd in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25.

STREAK: The Wildcats had a season-best five-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Texas-Permian the last time out on Feb. 23 at home.

WHO'S HOT?  Junior Lyndi Smith has hit safely in her last 13 games and leads ACU with a .431 batting average including five doubles, two homers and 15 RBIs.  ACU's strong lineup is bolstered by freshman infielder Demi McNulty (.429, 3 2B, 6 RBI), junior corner infielder Heather Peacock (.413, 1 2B, 7 RBI), freshman infielder Cara Hoover (.360, 2 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI) and senior outfielder Keanna Winkfield (.327, 1 3B, 6 RBI). The Wildcats hit .317 as a team.

IN THE CIRCLE... Senior Caitlyn Crain (5-2, 2.13 ERA, 1 SV) and junior Peyton Mosley (2-3, 2.95 ERA) are the workhorses for Abilene Christian while senior Shelby Hall is 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA over six appearances and three starts.
 
EMPORIA STATE

RANKINGS: Emporia State is ranked 13th in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25.

STREAK: The Hornets split twin bills with No. 2 Southeastern Oklahoma and Cameron last weekend after opening the season with seven straight wins.

WHO'S HOT?   Sophomore outfielder Stephanie Goodwin carries a team-best .531 batting average with three doubles, five homers and 14 RBIs into tournament play this weekend. She boasts an eight-game hitting streak. Redshirt-freshman infielder Cacy Williams, who has hit safely in each of her last nine games, is hitting .484 with five doubles, five homers and 11 RBIs. Sophomore infielder Taylor Zordel (.361, 2 HR, 8 RBI) and junior outfielder Andrea Piezuch (.353, 5 2B, 1 3B, 9 RBI) add to ESU's potent lineup. The Hornets boast a .336 team batting average.

IN THE CIRCLE... Senior ace Karley Schmelzer is 7-0 with a 0.90 ERA over five starts with a shutout. She has allowed five earned runs and 20 hits in 39 innings with 38 strikeouts. Fellow senior Lauren Sharp is 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in five starts.
 
NORTHEASTERN STATE

RANKINGS: Northeastern State is not receiving mention in the NFCA Top 25.

STREAK: Northeastern State has won its last four games to improve to 5-3.

WHO'S HOT? Senior infielder Lisa Ripperger leads the RiverHawk attack with a .500 batting average (12-of-24) with three doubles and a homer. Junior catcher Navada Campos represents NSU's top power bat hitting .458 with two doubles, three homers and 10 RBIs while junior shortstop Amanda Harjo has ridden a six-game hitting streak to a .433 average with two doubles, a homer and 11 RBIs. The RiverHawks are hitting .360 as a team.

IN THE CIRCLE... Freshman Kayce Wooldridge leads the RiverHawks in the circle with a 2-1 record while posting a 2.06 ERA over four appearances and two starts including a shutout. Senior Cayce Coleman is 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA over four appearances and three starts while posting 23 innings. Sophomore Alex Files is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts.
 
OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE

RANKINGS: Oklahoma Panhandle State is not receiving mention in the NFCA Top 25.

STREAK: The Aggies have lost 12 consecutive games since sweeping a twin bill with the University of the Southwest (N.M.) on Feb. 2.

WHO'S HOT? Junior catcher Emily Vasquez leads OPSU at the dish hitting .413 with four doubles, a homer and 9 RBIs. Junior outfielder Lilli Ward (.348, 6 RBI) and senior Krista Bomak (.348, 3 2B, 2 RBI) are the only other Aggies hitting over .300. Oklahoma Panhandle State is hitting .251 as a team.

IN THE CIRCLE... Freshman Samantha Arledge leads the Aggies in the circle posting a 1-2 mark with a 5.07 ERA and is one of six hurlers OPSU has used this season including senior Talena Tippett (0-2, 3.91 ERA), junior Presjel Dai'Re (0-3, 7.22 ERA), freshman Brittany Scruggs (1-4, 7.84 ERA), senior A'lex Koonce (0-2, 10.50 ERA) and senior Kayla Pollard (1 inning).

ST. MARY'S

RANKINGS: The Rattlers are receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25.

STREAK: St. Mary's dropped a 3-2 decision Thursday night at Texas Woman's, but have won nine of their last 12 games.

WHO'S HOT? Sophomore Nicole Sardelich blisters the ball at a .506 clip with a team-high 11 doubles while driving in 11 runs. Sophomore Vianna Gutierrez hits .421 with six doubles with two homers and 21 RBIs and leads a group of five Rattlers with multiple homers including sophomore Taylor Vidrine (.369, 2 HR, 8 RBI), senior Christina Rodriguez (.352, 3 HR, 21 RBI), senior Jared Gonzalez (.320, 3 HR, 16 RBI), sophomore Laura Benavidez (.280, 3 HR, 15 RBI). St. Mary's hits .327 as a team and scores 7.3 runs a contest.

IN THE CIRCLE... Sophomore Vianna Gutierrez leads the Rattlers in the circle with a 5-4 record while posting a 1.86 ERA while junior Emily Brittain is 6-2 with a 3.62 ERA. Senior Crystal Keller (2-0, 1.05 ERA) and junior Maricela Bissaro (1-1, 4.67 ERA) have also made starts for St. Mary's.
